We help set up and support community compost schemes across the city, in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council.

A great way to reduce household food waste is to compost your fruit and veg peelings. We've got some simple to follow tips to get started at home, including indoor solutions.

However, not everybody has the space, so community composting provides a solution for residents without gardens. We currently support dozens of community compost schemes in parks, allotments and community gardens with over 1200 households taking part. Compost produced from these schemes is offered to members, with leftovers donated to parks, community gardens and food growing projects in local schools.

How it works

The Food Partnership provides support and training to volunteers to help them set up and manage compost schemes in their neighbourhood. Each site has two compost monitors who offer inductions for new members joining the scheme and liaise with the Food Partnership to keep everything running smoothly. Find out more about volunteering as a compost monitor.

The bins are secured with code padlocks - members are given the code once they have had their induction. This helps ensure only the right materials are being put in the bins.

Members get plenty of advice and information and many of them say this is a great way of connecting with and getting to know neighbours and members of their community. Read our compost FAQ to find out more about how and why we help the community collect food waste.
