Sussex Gleaning Network organises volunteers to visit farms and harvest surplus produce for charity

They work with farmers across Sussex in search of fruit and veg in need of rescue, so they have their eyes peeled for gleaning opportunities at all times! Once the produce is harvested they send it to local charity partners, such as FareShare, who distribute the fresh and delicious crop to their network of charitable organisations feeding vulnerable people.
When:
- Mondays
- Tuesdays
- Wednesdays
- Thursdays
- Fridays
- Saturdays
- Sundays
The majority of gleaning days are planned with around 2 weeks' notice. To find out about the next glean that is scheduled, check their calendar.
We can say that most gleans happen between June and November. Seasonality plays a part in anticipating a gleaning opportunity, crops tend to be surplus towards the end of a growing cycle (late winter for veg and late autumn for top fruit).
Facilities:
Access to a vehicle shouldn’t be a barrier to come as lift-sharing is the most common way that gleaners travel to the day. Having said that, drivers are particularly welcome as sometimes they are short on available seats to the farm. It’s also a great way to get to know people before getting to the farm.
The Gleaning Network arranges travel for you if you do not have a car, but you are not covered by public liability insurance.

When the project is invited to glean they put a volunteer call-out to their mailing list and social media followers to let people know the date and rough location of the farm.
