About this event

Learn simple recipes for a homemade takeaway that’s just as tasty but cheaper and healthier.

Our experienced cookery leader will share essential cookery skills and favourite recipes that even beginners in the kitchen can create with ease. You will cook in pairs to make a delicious meal. Join us for a relaxing and friendly session and leave with new skills and inspiration.

This class is run on behalf of the Community Kitchen charity – thanks to our funders The National Lottery Community Fund.

Booking instructions

Who can attend?

People who are able to attend an in person cookery session. Attendees must be either social housing residents, receive a means-tested benefit, older people aged 50+  (must also meet another criteria on this list), have a long-term physical health condition or long-term mental health condition.

Costs:

This is a free course but if people are able we welcome a suggested donation of £5 on the day of the class to help cover the cost of ingredients.  Payments can be made by cash or card.

If travel/ transport costs will be an issue for you, please contact us as we may be able to help.

Application Information:

Please complete the form below to apply for a space on this class. If your application is successful we will respond to you around 2 weeks before the start of the course, to invite you and confirm your space.

Directions, travel and parking

The Community Kitchen is conveniently located at 113 Queens Road in central Brighton. There are a number of easy ways you can get to us:


By train:
We are easily accessible by foot from Brighton Rail Station.  Simply walk straight down Queen Road towards the town/ seafront, we are located just past the intersection with North Road. Look for our large windows onto the main street. The walk takes less than 5 minutes.


By bus:
A large number of Brighton & Hove bus routes stop nearby to the Community Kitchen, either at Churchill Square Shopping Centre or at Brighton Station. Explore local bus maps and timetables here.

By car:
The nearest car park is the RCP parking on North Road, which charges a flat rate of £5.50 after 5pm. For daytime parking, the most affordable central car park option is on Trafalgar Street, charging £8-9 for up to 4 hours.

Accessibility

If you are booking for someone who has support needs or access requirements please contact us to discuss before registering for a class. Please note that carers/ companions assisting someone with a disability to attend a class can access our concession rate tickets.

The Community Kitchen has facilities for disabled access and is easily reached by public transport or car. Some of our features are:

  • Level access entrance
  • Accessible toilet facilities
  • Wide turning space around all kitchen units
  • One height-adjustable cooking station – however please note that this station has room for two cooks so should be booked as a pair with a friend or family member. Please make sure to contact us when booking if you want to use this hob – we’re also happy to discuss any other accessibility requirements.
