About this class
Sussex Grazed Hogget / Mutton Share
Friday 30th August 2024

Our August Sussex Grazed share will Hogget and Mutton sourced from Grazing manager Tom Parry, at the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
You can read more about their approach to conservation grazing in our Grazing Relationships blog.
We have chosen a mixture of hogget and mutton Herdwicks for this share. The hogget will be over 1 year old and the mutton over 2 years old.
The Sussex Wildlife Trust keep Herdwick and Romney sheep. Both breeds are known for their good grazing abilities, hardy animals who can survive on out on the Downs all year round and will nibble away at bushes and brambles to keep the grasslands in good order.

Herdwicks are traditionally associated with Cumbria and were considered a duel purpose sheep producing durable wool and tasty meat. Although the wool industry can no longer financially recompense shepherds for their wool production, these sheep benefit us here in Sussex with their hardy nature and rough grazing nature.
The Romneys were bred in the low lands of Kent and Sussex, in the Romney Marshes. Their wool was once prized for it’s abundance and the animals for being robust, compliant and good eating.
