Public transport – during the summer months, the 77 bus route is often the simplest way to arrive on site, see directions below.

Cycling and walking

From Brighton, you can arrive via Dyke Road & Saddlescombe Road, but the route below is usually safer, avoiding the busy roundabouts where Dyke Road meets the A27. View a rough map here (don’t walk on Mill Road itself but along Green Ridge as outlined below).

  1. Start on Dyke Road in Brighton (the 27 bus route stop on Dyke Road at ‘Tongdean Lane’ is a good starting point)
  2. Head north on Dyke Road (up hill) to the Hilltop Café (just before the big roundabout at the A27). Cut across the field (called Green Ridge) behind the café towards the windmill.
  3. Go through the gate in the hedge on the left just before you reach the windmill.
  4. Cross the road (Mill Road) and take the path opposite.
  5. Go down the hill (it is steep so you may want to push your bike), over the footbridge which crosses the A27 and continue down the path to the track at the bottom of the hill.
  6. Turn left, go past the Rugby Club (which is on your right), through the gate & up the bridleway to the Clubhouse. (You’ll need to push any bikes up the bridleway – or alternatively lock it up at the Rugby Club and pick it up on the way home).

Alternatively you can cycle down London Road into Patcham, and follow the directions here (you may need to push your bike on the bridleway as above).

Bus routes

The No. 77 to Devils Dyke runs every day during the summer months ONLY (from late June until beginning of September). Outside of this time this bus only runs on Saturdays, Sundays & public holidays.

Ask the bus driver to drop you at Dyke Approach. Waterhall is to your right as the bus travels. When you get off, take the short path to Saddlescombe Road, cross the road & go through the gate into the field. Turn left and walk along the top of the field to the driveway which will take you down to the Waterhall clubhouse. Walking directions from the 77 bus stop.

You can also catch the number 27 bus to Tongdean Lane near the top of Dyke Road and walk the remaining section. Crossing the roundabout near the A27 can be tricky. Walking directions from the 27 bus stop

Or you can take the 5A to Patcham Place and walk – directions from Patcham Place.
