Cook for Ukraine

#CookForUkraine started off as an idea between friends with a mutual love of food and a desire to help those in need. Little did they know that a simple hashtag would lead to the beginnings of a global movement. Alissa Timoshkina is a founder of this inspirational campaign, which has seen thousands of people cooking, baking and sharing Ukrainian and Eastern European inspired dishes. #CookForUkraine aims to increase awareness of the humanitarian crisis, as well as raising funds for Unicef to aid children & families in Ukraine who have been displaced.

About the event

We are thrilled to welcome Alissa to the Community Kitchen for this very special masterclass. The evening will be hosted by Kitchen regular Jethro Carr who has worked with Alissa at food festivals and events across the UK.

Alissa is an experienced cookery teacher, supper club host and author of celebrated cookbook “Salt and Time: Recipes from a Russian Kitchen”.

You will work in pairs to create a menu of Alissa’s favourite dishes –

  • Fennel, apple and white cabbage sauerkraut
  • Slaw with red cabbage, apples, and sunflower seeds
  • Sauerkraut and potato latkes with dill soured cream
  • Holubtsi Pie (filled with beef or mushrooms)

Dietary information: The menu contains meat, dairy and gluten. It can be adapted for vegetarian or gluten-free diets but this must be specified when booking. Please note we cannot guarantee the kitchen is a fully gluten-free environment. For any other allergies or dietary requirements, please contact us to discuss before booking.

Proceeds from ticket fees* and all additional donations raised from this class will be donated to the #CookforUkraine campaign.

“Today, more than ever, I feel how important food is to our understanding of the world around us.

Like millions of Russians, I too have Ukrainian roots, and grew up on a beautiful diet of Ukrainian and Russian dishes. These countries have shared a complex and rich history, and the culinary language reflects this relationship in the most powerful and relatable way.

My heart goes out to all the people of Ukraine! I thank you all for caring, and for putting the needs of children and their families first. Let’s cook for peace, for freedom, for truth, for common sense, for rational thought and for love.”
