We are probably all too familiar with that dreaded feeling of having to cook dinner after a long day at work. For Pip and Nish, it was no different. Spending their days working in London, only to return home both hungry and exhausted made cooking dinner a chore. That is until Nish’s mum, Roo, decided to step in.

Roo knew she could help out the two by offering, in the typically kind and helpful manner of a mum, to cook dinner for the both of them. Suddenly, nights of reheating leftovers and almost falling asleep at the hob were over and dinner became a delight of home-cooked Indian food and snacks.

Over time, Nish and Pip realised that others would probably enjoy a night off from cooking and the chance to indulge in authentic Indian food and thus, Majahma was born. What started off as just one mum’s act of kindness, grew into Majahma, a Sussex based sustainable Indian takeaway service.

Since Nish and Roo live in Sussex, a stone’s throw away from the South Downs, they were determined to create a takeaway service that would be as harmless to their environment as possible. They didn’t want to just contribute to plastic waste and so the idea of packing their food into tiffins made perfect sense, helping to keep the business environmentally friendly. The tiffins are as fun as they are sustainable: four stainless-steel stacked tins that contain all the dishes, including rice, for your takeaway.

Majahma’s system allows customers to reheat the food in the tins by separating out and placing the tiffins directly into the oven. Microwaving and cooking on the hob are also possible options for heating up your dinner but the metal tiffins are a useful plastic-free alternative to food packaging and cookware.

Majahma

From chakri to tamarind chutney, mooli to corn, Majahma offers a wide range of vibrant dishes. Their ingredients are fresh and, whenever possible, locally sourced. You can choose your dishes to be either vegetarian or vegan, so there is something for everybody to try.

Majahma deliver a packed tiffin to your door every week (or fortnight) and then swap your empty tins for a full set with every delivery. After six orders, the tiffins are yours to keep forever. You can use them throughout the week as an alternative to typical plastic tubs.

P.S: Majahma are currently giving away tiffins with first orders, so grab yours for free whilst you can! Nish and Roo are also joining us in our Community Kitchen for a special fundraising masterclass making Gujarati dishes typical of a wedding celebration – find out more and book your space.
